I am a hard core Star Trek fan.  Whenever there is a new Star Trek movie, I would normally try and be one of the first ones to see it. Last night was one of these occasions.

A few of us hard core gamers got tickets to the Malaysian Premier of Star Trek last night at GSC Mid Valley courtesy of Hot Potato Publishing Sdn. Bhd. Since Star Trek Nemesis, I have not bothered much about this TV/Movie franchise and missed out the TV series "Enterprise" as my opinion was such that the franchise sucked after the brilliant Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series in the 90s which I dilligently followed during medical school.

As for last night's Star Trek movie, there were lots of action typical of JJ Abrams. The opening is typical of Star Trek - close encounter with a Star Trek Alien Baddie (STAB). Since the actors were younger then previous Star Trek movies, there were lots of jumping around and stuff. The action was much quicker and pretty exciting. The action scenes. were not OTT as I would expect from JJ Abrams a la Mission Impossible 3. Not OTT is OK in my books for a Star Trek movie. I believe 'believable' is the word I'd use to describe the action sequences.

The plot was nothing much to talk about and was a bit dated. I shall not write about the plot since Star Trek is not out on general release yet.  The humour was good but there is too much of it and it felt campy at times. Some of the comical sequences made me laugh, but they were not as bad as the attempted humour in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. As for the acting, well Karl Urban as Bones McCoy was the best in mimicking the Star Trek Original Series characters. Simon Pegg as Scotty was not too bad as was Zachary Quinto as the young Spock. The worst was Chris Pine as Jim Kirk. I could not relate Chris Pine's Kirk to William Shatners'. They should have chosen a better actor.

Star Trek for me is not just about the plot, action and characters. It's also about the soundtrack and I must say this movie's soundtrack is the best after Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

That's all for now. Go to see Star Trek. If you are a hard core Trekker, keep an open mind. If you are a casual Trekker, I hope this movie will get you into the wonderful world of Star Trek.

Once again, a big thank you to Hot Potato Publishing Sdn. Bhd.  for the Star Trek movie premier tickets.
